A virtual guided tour and 360 degree vision is providing the community with behind-the-scenes access to NorthConnex, ahead of its opening in the coming weeks.

Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said while the COVID-19 restrictions prevent an on-site community open day, the virtual guided tour would ensure everyone gets access to Australia’s deepest tunnel.

“Bypassing the notorious Pennant Hills Road with twin nine-kilometre tunnels is one of Australia’s most significant and eagerly anticipated road infrastructure projects,” Mr Crouch said.

“The virtual guided tour replicates a ‘real life’ experience, which I hope can give Central Coast residents an insight into the size and scale of this fantastic project.

“We’re encouraging people to head online and take a look inside Australia’s newest road project, and explore some of the unique features and technology that have never been seen before.

“Interactive 360 degree camera views will also give people a peek at every angle, including the tunnel entries, traffic control room and the underground light installations.”

Mr Crouch said NorthConnex would provide the missing link in the National Highway route that Central Coast motorists have been demanding for decades.

“Moving between Sydney and the Central Coast will become more reliable with a one-way trip in the NorthConnex tunnel estimated to take eight minutes, saving drivers 15 minutes in travel time compared to Pennant Hills Road,” Mr Crouch said.

“Motorists will bypass 21 sets of traffic lights along Pennant Hills Road, while up to 5,000 trucks a day will be removed from this busy road corridor, easing congestion and improving safety.”

The $3 billion NorthConnex tunnels are in the final stages of operational testing and software commissioning, and will open in the coming weeks.
