Vulnerable people who face roadblocks in obtaining a driver’s licence will soon find it easier, thanks to the NSW Government’s $20 million Driver Licensing Access Program rolling out across the Central Coast region.
Parliamentary Secretary for the Central Coast and Member for Terrigal Adam Crouch said Coast Shelter and Bara Barang would receive funding to help disadvantaged people obtain their learner or provisional driver licences.
“This program helps disadvantaged groups like Aboriginal communities, vulnerable youth and people from low socio-economic environments get their driver licence,” Mr Crouch said.
“The Driver Licensing Access Program helps drivers navigate the Graduated Licensing Scheme (GLS) by preparing them for the driver knowledge test to gain their Ls, and helping them clock up the 120 logbook hours.
“More than 7,500 participants across NSW have already gained their L-plates and P-plates through this program, and I’m pleased that vulnerable people on the Central Coast will now receive this same support.”
Minister for Regional Youth Bronnie Taylor said a driver’s licence could be a game changer for people living in regional areas.
“This is an issue that has consistently been raised with me since becoming the Minister for Regional Youth. A driver’s licence can be the difference between getting a job, getting to TAFE or accessing essential health services,” Mrs Taylor said.
Minister for Regional Transport and Roads Paul Toole said unlicensed drivers were about twice as likely to be involved in a casualty crash and four times more likely to be involved in a fatal crash.
“Getting people inside the licensing system significantly reduces these risks. Helping people get their licence is not only changing lives, it’s helping save them,” Mr Toole said.
The NSW Government is also seeking volunteers to be learner driver mentors at: www.rms.nsw.gov.au/roads/licence/driver/driver-licence-access-program/index.html.
